LIMOGES
Limoges, situated on the banks of the river Vienne, was founded during
the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus after the conquest of Gaul and
was initially known as Augustoritum. Limoges grew up as two separate cities
in the Middle Ages and were not united until the French Revolution. The
town has therefore two hearts - the old cité dominated by the Gothic
cathedral of St Stephen overlooking the river and the château district
with its half-timbered houses which is nowadays the commercial centre
of the city. Kaolin, a fine white clay also known as china clay, was discovered
in the region in the 18th century and as a result the city became known
worldwide for its porcelain. The Musée National-Adrien-Dubrouché
traces the history of ceramics and has a collection of over 10,000 pieces.
The painter August Renoir was born in the city in 1841. (45 minutes drive)
